What if there was a 4th "vault" in spy missions that lets you deploy a mini liset air support when teammates trip alarms

    Posted: 16 Nov 2019 05:34 PM PST

Currently there are 3 vaults in a mission, but there's 4 people in a squad, so one person ends up sitting there doing nothing.

What if there was a 4th (optional,) failsafe vault that lets you momentarily pause data destruction timers? (Like liset air support) It would make spy missions more doable, and give the 4th person something to do.

Hey DE, you know how you made Vauban's 3 scale with enemy level? You just fixed endgame difficulty and I'm not sure you realize.

    Posted: 16 Nov 2019 08:09 AM PST

Let me start off by doing the forbidden thing: making comparisons between Warframe and Destiny. I know most people are tired of having the two compared, but Destiny (2 in particular) does one thing almost absurdly well: difficulty. Even the weakest enemy in the game can still be dangerous if you don't take care of it, but at the same time it always feels like you can win as long as you play well. While this perfect balance has a lot of factors - health regeneration, damage falloff, ammo economy, AI, enemy placement, etc. - the one I think Warframe could benefit the most from is how damage is handled, both from and to players.

In Destiny, all enemies have a level, but players also have a level, and the difference between these levels determines incoming and outgoing damage. There's also a cap on how much you can out-level an enemy, but it's pretty generous; by the time you hit it, you can steamroll just about anything, much like in Warframe right now. The difficulty comes in the build up to that level, much like it is in Warframe when all you have is a rank 3 serration and and a damaged ammo drum. So how is anything in Destiny difficult? Easy: just reduce the amount you can out-level an enemy by. While you still need to hit the level in the first place, that preparation only goes so far, and skill will have to see you through the rest.

So how does this apply to Warframe? How could a system based on standardized damage and health values be adapted to a system where 20x damage multipliers and outright invincibility are common? That's something that DE is going to have to address eventually, but that doesn't matter here. All I'm really proposing is that weapons and abilities do damage partially - but not entirely - based on enemy level. This gives all weapons a "base" damage that stays mostly constant with level, but still requires mods to deal with higher levels. While low-level content will still be easy for veteran players, the difficulty curve of the game will be a lot more linear, instead of the absurd exponential difficulty cliff we currently have. This would also allow non-exalted abilities to still be useful for damage - looking at you, Frost's 1.

There are a lot more things DE could do to make the game both more challenging and more rewarding (one idea is to give all heavy units armor, so that armor-stripping abilities are useful against all enemy factions) aside from the obvious "fix armor scaling", there's too many words in this post already.

Edit: the lack of example means I didn't make my point very clear, so let me try again.

For a veteran, difficult content starts around level 80, sortie level. Going past that point brings enemy health and damage so high that you need to specialize, but just about any frame and weapon can do decently well when at it. Imagine that those levels were the baseline for damage output - that is, you would see current damage numbers against a level 100 enemy. A level 10 enemy would take just 10% of that, while a level 200 enemy would take twice that. Of course, enemy health is much more than doubled at those high levels, which means a well-modded weapon is still needed, but it's a start to something like balance. Warframe abilities, which don't have such powerful mods, would use a different baseline for damage.

Please don't take these numbers as a hard must, they can always change. Maybe level 80 is better as a baseline, maybe it should use exponential bonuses instead of linear, whatever. The important thing is that the curve gets smoother and progression is less abrupt. Apply the same logic for damage frames take, perhaps? As it is now, good luck bringing your Volt to a profit-taker fight without adaptation and 2 arcanes.

Edit 2: DE has known this on some level for a while now, and you see more and more abilities scale based on level in some way. Vauban's 3, Ember's 4, and Saryn's 2 (IIRC) all scale with level, and I expect more abilities will do so in the future. All absorption-based abilities also scale with level: Frost's bubble, Gara's wall, Rhino's iron skin, Nezha's warding halo, etc.
