Immunity doesn't make things interesting, fun, or challenging, just a drag.

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 03:49 PM PDT

Why use this as a design crutch? Genetrixes being immune to most status effects makes sense, they're a spawning pod. But is there a reason why literally all the new enemies are completely immune to viral? Not just viral procs, otherwise that'd be fine and dandy. But immune to viral damage, period. It's not because "theyre a disease so theyre immune to being sick", because otherwise chargers and mutalists would be immune, too. Why aren't they just massively resistant and/or immune to the procs only?

Does this accomplish anything? "oh now you have to actually build around it before going in" no, you really don't, you just grab a melee weapon and bash their heads in, because that'll almost always be more effective than changing your setup every time you want to do something.

And what's the point of giving warframes an ability, if you'll just make enemies ignore it when it's convenient. Limbo just cries in the corner every update now, because fuck stasis, right? Mallet just stopped working midway through Deimos on tier 2 and 3 iso vaults, enemies will still attack it, but if Loid is anywhere in the vicinity they'll make a B-line for him.

Giving things immunity doesn't make them interesting, it makes them a drag, unless they're "boss" type enemies like the open world threats. Eidolons are a great example of using immunity as a good design, because they're a boss that you need to be prepared to fight, theyre huge and scary and they act like it. Tusk Thompers, as the polar opposite, are just an annoying slog through waiting til it stands still and praying that it doesn't suddenly decide to spin 180 degrees. The Exploiter orb is a good example of an immune enemy, because it's in a (arguably) well designed fight where damaging it is replaced by an actual mechanic. Profit taker is just a drag of "is it one of the types we brought? no? then cycle" until you get to the next phase.

But for regular ol' enemies? Immunity/Massive DR never makes them interesting, or makes you behave differently, you just one shot them or whip out your melee. Sentients just get killed through their DR unless they're really high level, at which point you probably brough a melee that shreds/insta kills them regardless. Deimos "elites" being immune to viral doesn't make people change up their build, in fact a lot of folks barely even notice that they're immune- just that they're not dealing damage, and then they just switch to melee and go about business as usual. And if they do decide to change things up, they'll just use a generic crit/hunter munitions build, because there's not much of an upside to using a status build if you can't use the good status effects.

Now I know, not every enemy can be designed to be their own mini game, but things like the saxum and nox are great! Why not go the way of "can be killed by just hitting, but going for weak spots is always better" like that for the "elite" unit? (The jugulus' scales-with-your-dps is cool tho)

Marked For Death: Where We’ve Been, and Changes to Come

    Posted: 24 Sep 2020 11:30 AM PDT

As many of you have likely been following, one of the most intensely discussed Helminth abilities has been Marked for Death. Upon releasing the Helminth, we knew that it would be a system that had the potential to shift strategies in Warframe drastically. Helminth is a system in the vein of what we find most exciting about creating a game like Warframe, which is to design something that feels truly exciting to us as Devs, and hopefully to you Tenno as players.

With the Helminth System, we knew that abilities/systems may need to be tweaked back and forth to help prevent anyone from feeling as though there was only one 'good way' to use the Helminth System. We're still tweaking resource costs as we speak! A key part is ensuring the Helminth System aligns with how it should fit into the overall ecosystem of Warframe instead of dictating the ecosystem.

Enter Marked for Death. When we discovered the several unintentional effects that Marked for Death was occurring we knew we had to act efficiently before more resources went into Tenno carving out a build for it, and for how this unintentionally insanely powerful synergizing ability may fit into a new niche meta. Marked for Death had several problems which added up to an ability that had a large AOE range, had mods stacking twice (yikes!), which led to distributing millions of unintentional damage.

The spirit of Marked for Death was to only consider the effective damage on the targeted enemy. It was intended that if you took out a heavy unit, enough damage could be dealt to units with lower health around to kill them (or come very, very close). It was not intended to use finishers that overkilled a unit with lower health that had enough MFD power to kill much larger and heavier units around it.

    Enter last Thursdays re-balancing effort.

Fixed Mods applying twice to the Marked for Death Damage portion dealt in the AOE.

Fixed base Damage using the Health/Shield Damage dealt and not capped at the Health+Shield the target had prior (e.g. enemy with 5 Health gets hit by 100 damage, and 100 damage is shared in AOE. It should just be the 5).

Radial damage was never meant to exceed the target's Health and this was our bad. The desired strategy we wanted was players prioritizing tank units like Heavy Gunners to do AOE clears since heavy units have more Health than normal, thus the radial AOE would likely be lethal, not just normal units. This issue combined with numerous bugs of Mods stacking meant this was way over powered. A key part of reviewing these changes will be ensuring that players understand the best case scenario we envision for the power is targeting high-Health enemies to do radial damage to weaker enemies.

Removed Critical Chance from Marked for Death radial AOE.

Capped Damage multiplier stat to 75% and normalized Damage type mults.

Here's an example of normalized Damage type: if the Damage you deal is 0.5 Impact, 0.4 Slash, 0.3 Heat that sums to 1.2x but after normalizing they become 0.42 Impact, 0.33 Slash, 0.25 Heat.

Fixed Marked for Death with Arcane Trickery equipped triggering invisibility almost every time, because each enemy hit by the AoE has its own 15% chance to activate Arcane Trickery."

Our team made the decision to change Marked for Death, but based on community feedback and our own testing, the hammer was swung too hard on the changes - (compounded by the major fixes). The scenario we had re-balanced Marked For Death around was too rare to be useful and satisfying. We knew that the conversation was not over on Marked For Death, and we committed to taking another look to hopefully restore balance to this ability. Now that the facts have been laid out, here's where that conversation continues today:

We are changing Marked for Death to start its base damage at 65%, which will cap at 150% with Mods. Since the 'Damage Type In = Damage Type Out', this will scale well with certain damage types, specifically ones with DOTS s which is what we envision.

Simply put: We're bringing the damage back up!

The Dev work behind the scenes has already been completed, so we are now looking to submit the changes in a HF that will hopefully be going out next week with Helminth Bile changes as well!

Warframe 2020 stat stick guide for Khora/Gara/Atlas and others

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 12:34 AM PDT

I keep seeing the same questions on reddit so I decided to make a short guide on stat sticks for warframes that make use of them.

Let us start with what stat sticks are and how they work. They are melee weapons that enhance your abilities directly or indirectly. Their stats don't matter, only the mods you put on them, their riven disposition and in some niche cases their passive. If you are using a stat stick you should not be using it to hit enemies but only to enhance the respective melee ability you are equipping it for.

Abilities affected by stat sticks currently are: Ash Bladestorm, Atlas Landslide, Baruuk Serene Storm, Excalibur Exalted Blade, Gara Shattered Lash, Khora Whipclaw, Valkyr Talons, Wukong Iron Staff

The best stat sticks are weapons with a high riven disposition.

Amphis is currently king with its 1.5 disposition.

As of Update 28.1 Xoris currently resets its combo whenever you use any of the abilities affected by stat sticks so it is highly recommended to use any other melee.

Venka Prime is currently the only weapon in the game that can reach 13x combo which makes it an ok stat stick although it has a really low riven disposition (0.8).

For all builds there are two possible approaches to keep combo up, either use Drifting Contact or Naramon Power Spike passive.

Notable mention: Melee Augment Mods are nice with their +100% damage but due to lower riven disposition it is usually better to use another weapon since even a tiny riven disposition difference will more than make up for the +100% damage VS +90% elementa/IPS damage mod difference. Without a riven weapons like Jaw Sword, Mire, Dual Cleavers, etc are your best choice.

Non riven build: replace the riven in my builds with a +100% damage augment for the weapon you are using (Jaw Sword, Mire, Dual Cleavers, etc). Non riven builds are more than viable so don't worry about getting a riven.

These are my current stat sticks for Khora/Gara/Atlas

    Khora Whipclaw

Stats priority: Critical Damage > Damage > Elemental Damage > Impact/Puncture/Slash Damage > Critical Chance > Combo Duration > Status Chance

Explanation: Your aim is to increase critical damage as much as possible due to the super high base critical multiplier. Using Blood Rush and Weeping wounds is recommended while sustaining combo duration unless you are going for a short mission where you can't stack combo. More critical chance on riven has diminishing returns with Blood Rush.

Note: Accumulating Whipclaw provides an additive +350% ability strength so when modding Khora strength is not that important.

Example Khora stat stick for Naramon

    Gara Shattered Lash

Stats priority: Damage > Elemental Damage > Puncture/Slash Damage > Combo Duration

Explanation: Since Shattered Lash has no critical chance or status chance you should aim for flat damage. Her damage is affected by combo counter as of Update 28.1. Do NOT use Impact mods on her stat stick since Shattered Lash does no impact damage.

Example Gara stat stick for Naramon

    Atlas Landslide

    • The target and enemies within 2 meters are dealt 100 / 200 / 300 / 350 📷 Impact damage as a melee strike with a 200% critical damage multiplier, a 5% critical chance, and a 5% status chance.
    • Base Damage × (1 + Damage Mods) × (1 + Elemental Mods) × (1 + Strength Mods).
    • Landslide gains 25% additional damage for each combo multiplier, up to a 3.75x damage multiplier at 12x combo, or 4.0x with 📷 Venka Prime equipped at 13x combo.

Stats priority: Damage > Elemental Damage > Impact Damage > Combo Duration

Explanation: Since Landslide has low critical chance and low status chance you should aim for flat damage.

Example Atlas stat stick for Naramon

    Ash Bladestorm/Baruuk Serene Storm/Excalibur Exalted Blade/Valkyr Talons/Wukong Iron Staff

Technically these abilities are not affected directly by stat sticks. Blood Rush, Weeping Wounds etc don't affect them and neither do other melee mods. So why are they listed here?

These abilities are only affected by the Gladiator Set mods

Set Bonus: +60% critical chance, stacks with Combo Multiplier (10% per mod equipped).

The best weapon for a stat stick in this case is Venka Prime so at 13x combo you will have 13x60%=+780% critical chance.

Note on Ash Bladestorm which is also affected by attack speed unlike the others in this group:

    • Animation speed is affected by mods that influence attack speed (e.g. 📷 Fury), 📷 Speed, 📷 Warcry, and 📷 Arcane Strike. Animation speed is not affected by the base weapon's attack speed, 📷 Berserker, or casting speed mods (e.g., 📷 Natural Talent).

Deconstructor stat stick for all melees and the abilities listed above

You can use Gladiator Might, Gladiator Rush and Gladiator Vice on deconstructor to gain the 1x combo bonus (Deconstructor can't gain combo) of the set (+30% critical chance) but it's nowhere nearly as effective as a seperate stat stick. Note that while the gladiator set from Deconstructor does not stack with the one equipped on your melee stat stick you can use it in the case of Khora's Whipclaw to gain even more critical chance.

PS: Please correct me if I missed any major point about stat sticks.
