The Great Ensmallening: Part 3 (Mesh Accuracy + Sound Fidelity)

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 12:56 PM PST

Ensmallening Part 3: Mesh Accuracy + Sound Fidelity.

    Tenno,

We bring you Part 3 of the ensmallening. By now you already know about Part 1 and Part 2, but now we will go into how we are changing Mesh Accuracy and Sound Fidelity.

We expect the download size to be 7 GB with an estimated 3.6 GB of savings overall, meaning the game just got 3.6 GB smaller in file size! These numbers may vary slightly.

Our target release for this is THIS week on PC. Until then, read on about how we are continuing to optimize Warframe, while also making gains in quality!

    Mesh Accuracy:

A big part of the Ensmallening Part 3 is how Meshes are changing. Not only are we reducing filesize, we are also significantly improving quality.

Look to this Before and After for the improvements you can expect:

    Before and After

BEFORE: Take care to observe the eyes and mouth and ear details. Jagged details are widespread.

AFTER: Take care to see the improved contours and details across the Mesh. A much smoother finished piece!

    Sound Fidelity:

This one is for the audiophiles!

We are making some changes to the way we handle encoding of Warframe's audio. We are replacing xWMA with OPUS and a new ADPCM encoder! ADPCM will provide less noise and brighter mids. It also has improved spatialization so that the full audio mix just feels more alive.

Here is a spectrum plot of sine sweep 20-20k with the new ADPCM encoder above the old. Much improved!

In general, Opus will really improve the way you hear Warframe's accompanying music. We also expect this to improve general synchronization and any start up lag! Stay tuned for a future Devstream where we go over this in a bit more detail, too, for the audiophiles out there!

    Cheers Tenno!

Early Game is in a Really Bad State

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 02:47 PM PST

Okay so basically I have the problem of every time I introduce someone new to the game, I pretty much have to promise that the beginning of the game is the downright worst part and that it gets better around Uranus and The Second Dream.

The quests in particular are in serious need of a rework. Especially ones that ask you to repeat the same mission and objective multiple times. Like at the very least spread these out among missions.

I don't think much can be done about how the Star Chart. It's too engrained in the game, but basically asking people to do the same mission types again and again gets really stale.

Junction challenges range from being fine to just being horribly boring.

I honestly do hope that a lot of the early game gets revamped to new players interested, and keep it comparable to modern games. I think open worlds are a pretty good step in the right direction since all of them can be reached fairly quickly and offer a lot of the more fun parts of the game. But really it is those early disconnected quests that kind of kill interest when I try to get new players to play the game. And it really does take until Second Dream for anyone to start enjoying it.

We should be able to choose when to start boosters

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 01:21 PM PST

I'm not the biggest fan of having boosters run out in real time but I don't think that's gonna change.

But when we get boosters we should be able to choose when to start it. A lot of the time when I play until just after midnight I end up getting a 9 hour booster or something and it's gone by morning. It's as if I never even had one because I wasn't on during the duration.

At least we could use the boosters when we actually have time to use them like a 3 day booster on a weekend or 8 hour booster during the day rather than overnight.

We could just earn the booster then activate it similar to when we buy them and even stack the timers.

And if they don't want us stockpiling boosters for events or whatever then make it similar to a discount where you can choose to apply it withing 2 days or so before it's gone for good. So that way if I get a 13 hour booster at night I can at least use it in the morning which would apply to the same day I got it

Plea to bring back fishing bait building

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 09:58 AM PST

Back in the not so old days it was possible to buy blueprints for fishing bait for PoE. A nice little way to burn extra resources and not spend standing. Can we have it back please, on top of the current "pay for fish with your reputation"? Maybe even extend it to Fortuna and Deimos? Could be great.

Everyone deserves to have a "Fishing" tab in their foundry with a nice little fish icon too.
