Posted: 12 Apr 2021 06:01 PM PDT With Call of the Tempestarii on the horizon bringing with it images of space piracy and sailing, it has once again brought up how painfully lackluster Hydroid is in the current state of the game. Now despite getting a rework a while back that brought Hydroid slightly up to date, it still left a LOT to be desired and the game's 'meta' quickly left him behind yet again. However DE has gone really hard with the tap/hold functionality lately, and we've recently had a really great update to Zephyr. These two things have given me a few ideas about some potential fixes to our resident Pirateframe that could possibly bring him more up to speed with the current pace of the game, and I wanted to throw them out to the community to see what you guys thought about them. Passive: Admittedly I didn't really think much about his passive as passives are just generally minor utility. But maybe making the tentacles spawn on ability use rather than melee slam. Let's face it, most melee weapons these days are going to kill every enemy nearby with the slam attack, making his passive nigh useless. Tempest Barrage: This is one that was inspired by Zephyr's update. Like Tailwind, Tempest Barrage suffers from low base damage of a typically weaker damage type. Like Tailwind, I feel like this ability could really just use another 0 added to its damage. The second major problem with Tempest Barrage is the outdated Hold-to-Charge system. It was new, it was shiny, but now its just slow and clunky, just remove it and let Tempest Barrage fire for full effect on cast. Lastly, Corroding Barrage really just needs to change the damage type from Impact to Corrosive instead of just applying Corrosive status given that Corrosive status is overall weaker since the Status changes. Tidal Surge: Honestly not a whole lot wrong with Tidal Surge. It's a mobility ability the likes of which we've just seen again with Vial Rush on Lavos. Undertow: Oh Undertow...you glorious puddle simulator. The biggest issue with Undertow is its damage is so slow, unless you have allies firing into it, making Undertow quite useless to Hydroid on his own. Enter Tap/Hold functionality. If Hydroid was able to simply place a pool for a duration and fire into it himself, Undertow would provide much better area denial vs just sitting there doing nothing, waiting for enemies to eventually die. Something that takes way too long in the current pace of the game. Why I bring up Tap/Hold is to allow you to Hold to enter the pool yourself as the safety net ability it currently is, just now with added solo functionality on Tap. Tentacle Swarm: Effectively his only ability worth using right now, and even then Khora has stolen the spotlight. Although removing it's outdated Hold-to-Charge system and giving it the functionality to pull enemies into a placed Undertow (similar to how you can pull enemies in during Undertow) would extend the effective range of Undertow as well as removing the annoyance that is trying to shoot enemies that are flailing all over the place. Also implementing the "Drop enemies on death" logic that was applied to Zephyr's tornados would be nice here as well. Finally with the added functionality of potentially pulling enemies into Undertow, effectively limited the damage window for Tentacle Swarm, the damage would need to be frontloaded into a bigger number, rather than smaller numbers over time like it currently is. Anyway. Let me know what you guys think. I'm very much welcome to feedback as I am but one brain trying to come up with this. These ideas are simply addressing the issues I personally have with Hydroid and I'm sure there are plenty more out there. [link] [comments] | ||
