The Wolf Sledge is better than it looks

    Posted: 18 May 2021 11:37 AM PDT

I have been playing Warframe for a while, so I had a Wolf Sledge gathering dust in my arsenal. I recently took it out and thought, "this weapon doesn't have great crit stats, but I wonder what would happen if I built it for crit anyway?" As it turned out, what happened was extremely fun; I've been enjoying it so much that I would like to share the build, just in case someone else enjoys it as much as I have been.

For context: the Wolf Sledge is an MR7 hammer which was originally available two years ago during the first Nightwave. It has good damage, average attack speed, mediocre crit chance, below average crit damage, and excellent status chance. Uniquely, it can be thrown like a glaive, and has a fast flight speed. It can only be thrown while standing on the ground, and cannot equip any of the glaive-exclusive mods.

The details about this hammer which make it so fun are these:

    1. When thrown, the hammer homes in on enemies. If you aim a little bit above your target, this homing tends to get headshots.
    2. When thrown, the hammer explodes on impact.
    3. When thrown, if the hammer hits a head or gets a kill, it bounces to another target. Otherwise, it returns immediately.
    4. EDIT to add: It appears that the game considers thrown attacks to be heavy attacks, so they get double the bonus from True Steel / Sacrificial Steel.

When I first used this hammer, I was a bit underwhelmed because I saw its stats and built it for status, but the slow, big hits you get from throwing it don't mesh well with a status build. The crit build fixes that nicely, and performs much better than I expected it to. Throws consistently get me one-hit kills, even in higher level areas like Sedna and lower-level Kuva Lich missions. And even when you don't get a kill, the hammer still staggers on impact, letting you throw repeatedly with little risk.

All of this combines to make the hammer extremely satisfying to use. The homing isn't so good that you can't miss, but it's good enough that you don't need to be precise. I find that I can aim slightly above head-level and whip the hammer down a hall, and it will usually get a couple of kills. It also works very well in combination with enemy-grouping effects, like Larva or Airburst. It works particularly well with the Proboscis Cernos; I find that if I aim and shoot and then immediately wind up a throw, I'm already on-target and the hammer arrives at the tendril centerpoint shortly after all the victims do.

The build I used is a bit expensive (four forma for three V polarities and a dash polarity) but otherwise nothing special:

    • Sacrificial Pressure
    • Quickening
    • Molten Impact
    • Volcanic Edge Gladiator Might
    • Sacrificial Steel
    • Blood Rush
    • Organ Shatter
    • Drifting Contact
    • Stance: Crushing Ruin

I went for the Sacrificial mods to help the hammer hit hard even from a cold start, and Quickening to help it build combo faster. I doubled up on Heat damage rather than use a combination element because heat provides crowd control, helps the hammer deal with armor, and also benefits from the crits it will get.

Also, because you have to be on the ground and standing still to throw, I recommend you use a frame that can avoid being staggered or knocked down; I was doing all my testing with Rhino.

So yeah, if you've got this hammer lying around in your arsenal, maybe take it out, dust it off, and give it another chance - it might surprise you.

If you don't have a Wolf Sledge and want one, I have good and bad news for you. The good news is that you can still get it; the bad news is that you get the parts as random rare drops from the Wolf, and the only way to fight the Wolf right now is to buy a Wolf Beacon from Nora for 50 Nightwave cred. Also, you'll probably need to fight him at least 40 times to get all the parts. Also, I don't know which version of the Wolf shows up when you use a Wolf Beacon; originally, when he showed up randomly in a mission he was totally immune to status effects and debuffs, which meant you had no way to strip his unreasonably high armor. I remember one time when he showed up for me during a void fissure mission on Hydron, and my squad and I spent literally fifteen straight minutes just hammering at him before he went down. But then later on, when you went on a special assassination mission specifically to fight him, he wasn't immune like that. So if you do plan to farm him, play it safe - summon him in low-level missions, and bring a high-crit melee weapon with lots of radiation damage.

Alternatively, you might be able to trade for the parts; a quick Googling tells me that the full set's going for 200 to 300 plat, which is not terrible when compared to how annoying farming it would be.

In any case, have fun out there and good luck.

EDIT: I tried the build out on Steel Path, and it definitely struggles. It's great on Infested, and OK on Corpus, but the Grineer give it a lot of trouble. After a bit of experimenting, I swapped Volcanic Edge for Gladiator Might and it did a lot better. Still not great, but not bad, at least for low-level Steel Path.

When Nihil glassed people, did he have to aim glide first before he could glass em?
