Hopefully New War will explain the mechanics that were introduced in The War Within. Or, more precisely, they will show what will be influenced by the choice of the light, dark, or neutral side.

Opinion: After New War/Duviri, DE needs to focus in on the early game story

Tennocon 2021 was an absolute blast: from prime reveals to crossplay/save to 30 minutes of fandom-fueling insanity that was the New War Demo, I think it's safe to say that it was an absolute success.

The Demo especially swept everything else away in terms of general excitement, because after years of waiting, the culmination of every major quest from the Second Dream to The Sacrifice is about to come to fruition. For those of us who have made it through the Star chart and been around long enough to watch the progression of events from the start to now, this is everything we could really want from the game story-wise.

The issue is that there's a lot of people who weren't here from the beginning. A lot of newcomers are thrust into the world months away from the narrative climax of the story with next to no idea who is where, why they matter, how we're supposed to know them, and what they're supposed to interact with first before something else. At the present moment there are bits and pieces of storytelling that exist, but the story they paint is muddy without context:

    • in the quest "The Archwing", the big event at the end of the quest is that Vay Hek declares war on the Corpus by attacking Frohd Behk's fleet with an armada of Balor Fomorians, to the surprise of all since the Tenno destroyed their initial fleet of Fomorians. For new players, this conversation flies past in seconds and by the time there's a chance to process anything, the tile set is exploding around them and they're busy figuring out how to use their brand new vehicle. They have no idea who the Corpus guy with the grainy voice is, and may only have vague recollections of seeing the angry grineer face-man out on the Plains of Eidolon. They have no way of really grasping how this event changed the dynamic between the two factions, and all that is accomplished is the player gets a few minutes of confusion and a new thing to grind levels for.

    • The Gradivus Dilemma permanently altered the landscape of Mars, introduced Alad V to the storyline, and again showed the deterioration of the initial client-supplier relationship between the two major factions. New players get no indication that this series of events ever played out, and get to Jupiter with next to no clue who this guy is until the Lotus tells them in her opening dialogue for the mission.

    • Tangential to the last point, each planet has a node with a boss character who has to be defeated not only to complete the rail junction but to accumulate parts for other warframes. They're given unique models, dialogue, fighting styles, and have appeared as major characters in multiple never-repeated events. Outside of what the Lotus says at the beginning of each mission, new players have no idea who these people are outside of being an arbitrary obstacle placed in their way of progressing through the star chart, where their more experienced friends will likely motivate them with the idea that things will start to make more sense once they hit Neptune.

For all of the success they've had in writing this story past the Second Dream, they've left a graveyard of jumbled and vague plot lines for newcomers to have to sift through to reach it. The revamp of the initial quest paired with Vor's Prize does a good job of introducing players to the mode basic mechanics of the game, but the ball is completely dropped from there until the Second Dream, which itself presumes knowledge of several key characters. I know all hands are on deck for New War and various other features long time players have been shouting from the rooftops for, but once those are finished, they need to find a way to re-introduce old events and character plots back into the early game story in a way that makes the game easier to follow for new players and can help them sift through the ever-increasing complexity of the games systems. I don't expect anything like this to happen for a while, but eventually it needs to happen for the sake of longevity.

What do you guys think? Should new story content be put on pause after the New War/ Duviri Paradox so that the team can go back and fix the mess of stories in the first half of the star chart?
