Opinion Piece: weapon balancing is really bad and should be higher on DEs priority list

    Posted: 26 Apr 2022 06:17 AM PDT

Yea yea another one of these posts. I'll be up front, as it says in the title this is just an opinion. I would love if this got some traction, but I'm not expecting anything, just wanna share my thoughts and hear others.

The statement: Warframes weapon balancing is atrocious. Early game (pre-arbitrations/sorties) this fact gets obscured by the fact that nobody knows what they're doing. In steel path it becomes blindingly obvious that big AoE or chaining weapons are not only far FAR superior but actually almost (ALMOST! Not saying they are 100% but it's close) the only viable picks for content where enemies spawn endlessly.

The supporting argument: One, an anecdote. I can consistently do 90-99% damage dealt in random squads with Ogris. I cannot even begin to dream of doing that with a Soma.

Secondly, a look at the fundamental state of the weapon archetypes. Traditional weapon balance dictates that weapons with potential for massive damage ("power weapons") either be limited in that potential or limited in their availability. Examples, AoE weapons do less damage per target than single target weapons (some ways to accomplish this: lower base damage, severe damage drop off, etc) , or, ammo for power weapons is severely limited. Now look at warframe. The ammo economy can be completely negated with a single mod in the exilus slot. And, the big 3 Kuva AoE weapons can all do single target damage on par with the majority of other weapons, and do not have severe drop off.

This is about more than just "zoom and boom bad" though. I have a fundamental issue with weapon balancing outside of AoE and chaining weapons too. Even if Warframe removed both of those weapon types tomorrow, the lack of ammo economy, the methods used to scale weapons into steel path, and the pathetic state of most secondaries removes any need to bring multiple weapons. What are the use cases of secondaries? Back-up for when out of primary ammo, or to cover situations that the primary doesnt. Again, Vigilante Supplies in the exilus slot of your primary completely negates any ammo economy. The other problem is that the mods that allow guns to scale into steel path actively discourage switching weapons! This is completely fucked! Most weapons hit their "usable" zone after a few stacks of galvanized multishot mods and weapon arcanes, before that it can take 1-2 seconds and/or an entire clip or more to kill even an average steel path enemy. So if you empty your primarys magazine and are still surrounded by enemies, it's literally always better to just reload. There's also no enemies that even come close to requiring or simply encouraging use of separate weapon types. The closest you'll get are assassination targets where you might want to bring a sniper modded to their weaknesses, but again the galvanized mods and arcanes mean that the gap in efficiency is miniscule between switching to a kitted-out boss-killing sniper vs. killing the boss with your secondary that has full galvanized/arcane stacks. Possibly even in favor of using the secondary.

    Addressing counter-points:

"There will always be a meta, just play solo and use what you want." See my points on galvanized mods and arcanes which effectively kills off one of your weapon slots even solo. I also feel that the gap in efficacy between AoE/chaining weapons and single-target weapons is simply too much. It's more than just shaving 30-60 seconds off of your exterminate mission, AoE/chaining weapons make missions a walk in the park where single-target weapons require building for survivability and more careful gameplay. Simply too wide of a gap that imo makes single-target weapons feel like shit rather than making AoE/chaining weapons feel powerful.

"Use frame buffs." I feel that most frames actually do a good job at filling a niche and leads to a good diversity. Having to always bring mirage or saryn or always infuse eclipse or roar kills that diversity. Imo weapons should be the factor that brings all frames up to a certain level of killing ability.

Please let me know what you guys think!

Can we get rid of this super annoying visual Ogris AOE effect? Or make it only visible to the Ogris user? I can't see anything when someone is playing it. Especially in defense like missions.

I tried to make my beloved amprex work for steel path, but it's too weak. Any improvement suggestions?

There's an Anniversary Glyph this year!

    Posted: 26 Apr 2022 09:53 AM PDT

It looks like this. To get it enter NINEYEAR22 online at https://www.warframe.com/promocode

Alternatively on consoles (possibly PC) you can enter the code directly by interacting with the Marketplace terminal in your Orbiter in game and looking at the bottom right of the screen and pressing the appropriate input button.

    I like the Bonewidow model.

    Posted: 26 Apr 2022 09:30 AM PDT

It's so much nicer and actually looks like it was built by the Orokin. The Voidrig looks like if you put some round lego pieces on a corn... why can we use their helmets interchangibly but not their models? It wouldn't affect anything in the game.

Hoping Operator armor will be updated like Warframes were.

    Posted: 26 Apr 2022 12:32 AM PDT

In case you don't know Operator has base armor of 25.

I know the new system is supposed to be encouraging codependency, but even still without Basilisk Scales and even with buffed Stone Skin(locked to unairu) Operator armor will be around halved or less after the update.

To be clear I do not need my drifter to be miniNidus but taking one or two hits would be nice; maybe buff Husk too since it's not getting multiplied by waybound anymore either.
