Brainwashed into love — a recurring theme in Warframe

    Posted: 21 Jan 2022 06:34 PM PST

So, I just listened to all of Ordis's Cephalon fragments for the first time and it made me realize: Warframe has a recurring theme of ostensibly loving relationships being built on brainwashing.

When we think of brainwashed love in Warframe, our first thought might be of Ballas and how he manipulates others. In The New War, he uses the Narmer Veils to brainwash people into loving him on a mass scale. And we know it's specifically love he's going for because when the Drifter puts on the Veil, they hear a narrative in which they come to love Ballas as a father. He's not going for just awe, fear, or respect. Those Veils seem to feed its victims a story in which their view of Ballas is one of deep, personal love. We also see him try to manipulate the Lotus in a similar way, trying to force her, whether through brainwashing or outright force, into taking the role of his former lover Margulis.

Yet, it's not just Ballas whose "love" is built on brainwashing—it's the Tenno, too.

I mean, think of the Tenno's two closest relationships: Ordis and the Lotus. Ordis and the Lotus are both the closest thing the Tenno has to parents/family, yet both of them only love the Operator (at least initially) because that love was forcibly programmed into them. In the case of Ordis, he was reprogrammed from the human Ordan Karris to love and serve the Operator—not only that but this forced love was seen by the Orokin as a deeply humiliating punishment for just how out of character it would've been for Karris the human. Interestingly, it's not the Operator who was responsible for this brainwashing, but Ballas once again. That big blue asshole really does seem to take joy in wringing love out of unwilling subjects, even when he's not the object of their affection.

Similarly, the Lotus initially believed (and we with her) that she chose to love and protect the Tenno out of her own desire for children, but it is later revealed that she too was forcibly reprogrammed into her maternal role. Though she was originally Natah, an Orokin trap left on Lua left her vulnerable to reprogramming. The combined power of all the Tenno's dreams of Margulis did the rest. It's this revelation—that her love for us was forced upon her rather than genuine—that seems to have played at least a partial role in her turning against us and trying to rejoin her Sentient brethren. Yet, the Operator and Drifter keep loving and caring about Lotus despite both this revelation and her betrayal, which ultimately brings all of them back into harmony.

In all these cases, "love as brainwashing" seems to be a tool derived from the Orokin. Even when we Tenno benefit from it (in the case of Ordis and the Lotus), it's ultimately the Orokin who are responsible. Yet, the Tenno are Orokin-made and it seems we aren't above using similar means to achieve our ends. I mean, look at how we convert our Liches with our Parazon—we inject them with a little metal needle, they spasm for a moment, and then kneel before us, now our loyal servants.

In sum, I think it's really interesting how love in Warframe is so often a result of forced brainwashing. Yet, in the Tenno's case, we see how the figures who were initially forced to love them—the Lotus and Ordis—do ultimately choose that love, even after the revelation that they initially didn't have a choice.

I've really enjoyed "The Call of The Tempestarii" quest and I've dug around more about it.

The nice sea shanty that was played during the Sevagoth tryout really triggered me and it was very well fitted into the story.

I also stumbled upon this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzMZeP9Jbwo

The mere effort put into this simple and yet amazing song costs a lot of money and time to put together and yet we get it for free. I am sad that most players would actually rush through it once and never bother again. Most authors will charge you for a song like this.

I'd like to give DE my deepest appreciation for doing this. I support you guys and I hope it will continue in the future. Thank you!

P.S. I am unsure if such posts are tolerated here, but I had no other place to go.
